The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) was created
in 1971 and became an association of public and private members supporting a
system of 16 Future Harvest Centers that work in more than 100 countries to
mobilize cutting-edge science to reduce hunger and poverty, improve human nutrition
and health, and protect the environment. CGIAR's mission is to "contribute
to food security and poverty eradication in developing countries through research,
partnerships, capacity building, and policy support, promoting sustainable agricultural
development based on the environmentally sound management of natural resources."
